Adobe PDF Password Types and Ways To Remove Them

Password protection gives a sense of contentment that the system and the files saved in it is secured from any kind of unauthorized access. The idea of adding a security code to open a file has been popular from a long time and most of the applications offer this option of password protection. But Adobe Acrobat is a little different from other in terms of providing security features for the PDF file. Lets us know how?

#1: Adding Local Restriction to the PDF File Content

This is known as owner password for PDF. Here, the owner of the file allows others to view the contents of PDF file but restricts to copy, edit, print, or extract the data. This way, the data can be read or referred by others and by no way it can be misused. This quality of PDF file is considered very helpful in exchanging information at enterprise level, for internet marketing, to ensure safety of intellectual property etc. Let us understand it by a real time example. You might refer to Google Books online. Ever noticed that you are restricted to copy its contents, edit it, print it but at the same time view entire data saved in it. This is because the PDF file is owner password protected.

#2: Adding Open Document Restriction for PDF File

This is something you must be aware about. Just like any other application, you have to enter the security code to open the PDF file. It is called User Password for PDF File. It has its own advantages when the data saved in PDF is confidential and the owner does not want to allow anybody to read its contents.

To understand this by an example, just check out a mobile or credit card bill that you receive through email. It is sent in a PDF file and you will notice that you cannot open it without entering the security code and even cannot make any changes to it. This means the file has owner and user password set to it. This ensures that only the person with access to security code can open it but no can edit it.

The best part of setting a PDF file with open document password is they cannot be unlocked with password recovery tools. Even after applying brute force, it is quite difficult to unlock a PDF that has this security set on it.

However, there are scenarios when the password set to control file access for other creates troubles for the file owner itself. This is when the requirement for solution arises that can help to unlock PDF file or remove restrictions from it. In the later part, we will discuss some techniques that can be used to remove password from Adobe PDF file.

How to Unlock PDF File Having Owner and User Password?

#1: When it comes to unlocking a PDF that has local restrictions like copy, modify, print set to it, the idea of using online services can be adopted. There are a number of online PDF unlocking services that will give solution remove permissions from the file.

Some are effective while some are not. You have to share their PDF file data with them, agree to their terms and conditions, and yes you have to add a PDF file less than the defined size. This way, you can avail free service to unlock the Adobe file.

#2: Another is the user password. As we discussed above, you cannot normally open a PDF file that prompts for password. In such a scenario, you have to adopt a third party solution that can help you out to eliminate open document security from PDF file.

#3: There are paid solutions that can help to unlock PDF file set with owner and user password. The other reason to invest in them is these tools keep the source PDF file untouched and generate a new PDF file that is free from password. One such name that can be recommended for investment is PDF Unlocker software. This tool makes PDF file free from both master and open document restriction.

If Adobe Acrobat available, then it is possible to remove both types of security from PDF file but for that the passwords that are being set to the files should be known. In case you forgot the password, then the suggestions shared here can be helpful.

Adobe Acrobat Error 109 - Problem Reading the Document

A file on the system is vulnerably delicate. It can get damaged due to inconsistency in system software, hardware, or issues with the application using which it is created. Adobe Acrobat PDF file can get damaged due to variety of reasons and here we are going to discuss one amongst those.

Problem:

“I have Adobe Acrobat 6 Standard. I received some documents in the form of PDF files through emails. The PDF was fine till opening and filling the required fields but when I tried to save it, an error flashed on screen stating “The Document could not be saved. There was an error reading this document (109)”. After this I am unable to save the changes made to the PDF file.”

Discussion:

The problem shared above will not be encountered by the user when the PDF file is opened. Reason being, Adobe Acrobat or Reader ignores small issues with the file and display its content. However, when the user tries to save the changes made to the file, it checks out for any issue and responds to it through message. To get detailed information about the error, hold down the CTRL key and click on the error message (this idea works perfectly for any kind of error reverted by PDF file). Nevertheless, the error itself does not manifest the actual problem!

To get more information about the PDF document, go to ‘File’ menu and choose ‘Document Information’. This will give data like which application is used to generate the PDF file or if the files are modified using any non-Adobe application.

Although, it’s possible (generally, unlikely to happen) that the PDF file is opened with an older version of Acrobat or the Reader. Since, with every new release, features are added to the Adobe where possibility is the PDF specifications do get changed. Such issues may cause a PDF file inconsistent.

Basically, Adobe publishes PDF specifications using which anybody can create a PDF document. But the PDF spec consists of around 1100 pages and is very complex. So, the possibility is whoever created the PDFlib has made an error that is interrupting smooth functioning of PDF. There are chances that the developers have tested the PDF file with lower edition and opening it with a higher edition is causing problem.

Solution:

Inconsistency in smooth functioning of an application can happen due to variety of reasons. Acrobat error 109 resulting in restriction to save changes to the PDF is one of the consequences of PDF corruption. In order to work around the situation, the idea that can be adopted is to recover damaged PDF into a healthy PDF file. This can be done using either online services that promises to fix the files or third party PDF recovery software applications.

How to Track PDF File Views Using Google Analytic?

A PDF file can’t include any javascript code in it, so it will not be easy for traffic visitors on any particular PDF file to check how many people have seen the file. In this post I will explain how you can track PDF file views without including any javascript or html code in it.

Google Analytic is a free (premium is also available for big companies) tool offered by Google that helps website owners to monitor website traffic, page views, real time visitors, events, etc. This tool also allows you to check traffic location, traffic source, keyword traffic, and social traffic, etc.

Benefits of Including Tracking Visits:

By adding Google Analytic javascript code in your website you can also track PDF file link clicks and PDF file viewers. This will be very helpful to know how many people are interested to view the particular PDF file or which file has more views than other files, how long users are viewing the PDF file, and many more things.

Steps to Track Visits:

There are two ways to track visits on PDF files:

1. Google Analytic Javasript Code.

2. Google Analytic Page Tracking Code.

Step 1 - Google Analytics Javascript Code:

Google Analytic provides a unique code for every website to track visitors. If you don’t have an account then make it, by following this URL: http://www.google.com/analytics/. To track views, Include unique Google Analytic code just above in all pages of your website. To get the code Go to Admin >> Select Account >> Tracking Info. The code will look like the below image:

Tracking Traffic to PDF file:

Add a URL to every link that is pointing to the document on your site.

For example: <a href="http://www.url.com/buy/product.pdf?pdf=Buy-Product" target="_blank">Buy Product</a>

In the above link I have added “?pdf=Buy-Product” in the parameter to the end of the URL link.

In the end, I have added a custom text so that I can tell this link was “Buy Product”. This code will not change anything in display or download by the users.

Check this in Google Analytic:

To check this, open your Google Analytic account, Go to >> Behavior >> Site Content >> All Pages

In the search box, type PDF to see all PDF files on which you have added the above parameter. Your PDF file title will appear there at the end of the URL parameter.

Step 2 - Google Analytic Page Tracking Code:

Google Analytic Page Tracking javascript code allows users to measure page views of a particular page on a website, it could be in the menu, body, sidebar, or even at the footer link.

For example, the code is like this:

<a href="xyz.pdf" onclick="ga('send', 'pageview', '/filepath');">Click to view</a>

Place the code and change the href and filepath to your own to make it working.

Important: To use the above code you must have the Google Analytic code on your website page.

Conclusion: Both the above mentioned processes are to measure page views on a particular file like PDF, video, text, etc. These steps will help you to track PDF file views on your website. If you still need any help, feel free to ask for it in comments.

Importance & Features Of Adobe PDF File!

PDF (Portable Document Format) a very popular file format which has been used for business and forensic purposes. Many people don’t know what are the basic advantages and importance of using PDF files. So, through this post I am going to discuss some reasons explaining why a user needs to use Adobe Acrobat PDF file.

Some documents need an airtight formatting, character recognition of text in the images, and split & merge facilities. Thus, the PDF file format fits perfectly in this frame. Below, I share some of the most common reasons that make you use PDF document.

If a user wishes to share a document, but doesn’t want others to make any changes in it

Sometimes, a user needs to share information in the form of images or any other personal document, but he doesn’t want to allow the recipient to change anything in it. For such needs, PDF file comes out as a perfect rescue for users, with User Level and Owner Level Security (described below).

Organizations and experts prefer PDF files because through PDF they can transfer their confidential data in a secured way. That’s why “Law Enforcements” also prefer to save their information in PDF file, because PDF doesn’t grant access of altering PDF files without the correct password or authority of the document owned.

Some Qualities of PDF File Format

1. PDF is a Universal Format

Most of the PDF files are created using Microsoft Word while Adobe Reader plays a great role as a tool to view PDF files on both; Windows and Mac systems. It’s very easy to edit a Word document, but a user can’t edit PDF files. This is why PDF file is a very popular format for legal purposes. Adobe Reader is a free tool provided by Adobe System for worldwide users to view portable document files.

2. Trust Security

Legal persons also like PDF, to create official and crucial documents. According to legalscan.com for a crime investigation PDF document was admirable in Law court. A person must create this kind of file with strong password protection and without that particular password it cannot be altered. So PDF is the best file format to be used for investigation related documents.

3. Quick and Easy To Create

If you are working with Word, Excel, or Power Point, all these documents can be converted, & merged into one PDF file and you can easily work on a PDF file rather than working with multiple formats by continuously changing them.

4. Decrease File Size

The PDF file format is modified in a manner that lets you easily merge multiple items together like; photos, videos, etc. Then this file can be converted into small sized files without its quality being compromised.

5. Password Protection

Many firms deal with very sensitive data with copyright which needs a higher level security. PDF contains a password lock which efficiently locks the user's document so it cannot be altered without any being authorized to do so.

6. Free PDF Reader

PDF is one of the most used file formats which can be opened in any O.S devices because a number of PDF readers are available in the market for different operating systems, and all this comes at no cost at all.

Conclusion: PDF is a good document format to create, merge, modify, and secure data. So Law Enforcements also prefer PDF for storing crime investigation documents.

[Solution] PDF File is Damaged or Cannot be Repaired

The title of my blog today denotes some of the forums where I came across many related topics. Users are looking for the solution at one place, but didn't find it anywhere else. Today in this post I will share some tips and tricks to resolve the Error “File is Damaged or Cannot be Repaired”.

Symptoms:

This problem mostly arises when the Portable Document Format (.pdf) file is opened, before it was fully downloaded, older versions of Adobe Reader or Internet Explorer.

Possible Solutions:

There are two possible solutions that I know to solve the issue.

First: Delete Internet Explorer Temporary File

The problem can occur because of overflowing temporary internet files. I noticed small files can be viewed easily, but it is the big files that give a hard time to the users.

A short term solution to this is to delete all Temporary Files and restart the machine. A permanent solution is to empty the Temporary Files folder after each exit. Not doing so may even result in increasing the size of the temporary internet files folder.

To delete temporary files from Internet Explorer open IE, go to Tools in Menu Bar >> Internet Options >> Advanced Tab >> Security Section >> Check the box next to “Empty Temporary internet Files Folder when Browser is Closed” >> Click Apply and then OK to close the popup.

To increase the size of space on your hard drive for Internet Explorer temporary files, go to Tools in Menu bar >> Internet Options >> General Tab >> Browsing History section >> Click the “Settings” button >> Edit the number next to “Disk Space to Use” >> Click two times on OK button

Second: Older version of Adobe Reader

The second possible solution is to update Adobe Acrobat/Reader. However, check that you have the latest version and if you have it, then uninstall and reinstall it.

To update Adobe Reader, go to Help in Menu bar >> Check for Updates… >> If there will be any update then you see a message to update else you will see “No updates available” message.

In most of the users' cases, they have the older version of Adobe Acrobat. I am suggesting everyone to check for any update for Adobe Reader (the current Version of Adobe Reader is XI, as on 22, Sep 2014).

Third: Older Version of Internet Explorer

Some users have also said, using a particular version of Internet Explorer can also be a cause of this problem. Now one agrees which version of Internet Explorer can solve the problem, because this issue is coming from version 6.

To update Internet Explorer, go to Help in Menu bar >> About Internet Explorer >> there you will see the Internet Explorer version.

The current version is 11.0 for Windows 7, as on 22, Sep 2014. You can download the latest version from here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/ie-11-worldwide-languages. IE is available in 32 bit and 64 bit, and in many languages also like: English, Arabic, Dutch, and French.

Fourth: Corrupted or Damaged PDF File

Corrupt or Damage PDF files can also be the reason of the error. In one of my articles I have shared about “How to Repair/Recover Corrupted Files and Images from PDF Document”.

To repair Corrupt or Damage PDF files you can use online tools, or PDFWARE PDF Recovery Software. Online tools are not much of a help or capable to repair damaged PDF documents. But the PDFWARE PDF Recovery software is capable of recovering all data from corrupted PDF file with 100% data accuracy.

Conclusion: The above 4 solutions can help you solve the error – “File is Damaged or Cannot be Repaired”. All possible causes are described above. If you are still getting any error, feel free to share it in comment.
